Uttarakhand: Integrated Actions for Improving Health Status of Mothers & Children
Uttarakhand was created from the Himalayan districts of Uttar Pradesh in 2000. 86% of the state is hilly spanning four distinct geographic regions - Upper Himalayas, Mid Himalayas, Lower Himalayas and Plains. However, the majority of it’s over 1 crore population lives in the foothills and plains. Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar are the two wholly plain districts of the state, they account for 10% of land area and approximately 35% of the population. At 30% these two districts have the highest decadal population growth rate in the country and also lag the state average on mortality rates as well as other health and nutrition indicators.
